Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Director of Auxiliary Services/Facilities position. The Director of Auxiliary Services/Facilities is a full-time, year-round position starting at $91,312 - commensurate with experience. The Director of Auxiliary Services/Facilities provides leadership, general direction, and administration for the Custodial Department, the Support Services Department, and the Grounds Department. This role supports the mission of the College by supporting Campus Operations efforts to provide a safe, sustainable, beautiful, and clean workplace. The outputs of this position aid in facilitating academic excellence, student belonging, operational excellence, and civic responsibility. This position takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Leadership
- Provide strategic leadership and management in the areas of the Custodial Department, Grounds Department, and Support Services Department. Develop and implement strategic plans, policies, procedures and initiatives for these areas.
- Leads by example in treating others with respect, empowering employees, being proactive and innovative, using data analysis to support decision-making, and being a strong team player.
- Support staff professional development and training needs; makes recommendations regarding staff appointments, promotion, retention, salary action, and other personnel matters within the department.
- Identifies, recommends, and implements appropriate/necessary training and professional development for self and staff reporting to the position.
- Champion Diversity and Inclusion efforts to create an inclusive environment for employees from diverse backgrounds. Collaborate with HR and the office of D&I to implement inclusive policies and practices.
Campus Operational Support & Service
- Provide leadership and support to the campus operations team to plan, organize and respond to campus emergencies, including but not limited to weather and other significant events, to maintain business continuity.
- Measure, monitor, and benchmark departments' performance against peers and best practices to ensure the college performs at the highest level.
- Manage data oversight and make recommendations to improve existing processes. Monitors service deliverables/metrics and maintains documentation on scope of service, contacts, and timeframes. Improve upon and report actual results.
- Provide guidance in using resources to optimize the service levels, dependability, cleanliness, appearance, and safety of our facilities, grounds, and food service locations.
- Ensures staff have the tools necessary to provide an agreed-upon standard of care and service.
- Delivers timely, informative, and critical internal communications to a diverse group of faculty, staff, and other stakeholders regarding facilities conditions and campus operations service levels.
- Oversees the implementation of programs to create a safe working environment, promotes environmentally sound practices, and fosters regulatory compliance. Ensures requisite safety and code compliance in all areas.
- Regulatory Compliance - Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations in all service areas. Follow protocols outlined by EH&S in handling of materials and waste disposal in accordance with established guidelines.
- Works collaboratively with other departments where there is cross-functional overlap, i.e. construction and planning, ACPD, EHS, etc. Works collaboratively with other administrators and department heads; serves as an internal consultant.
Fiscal Management
- Oversees the development of the departments' operating budget. Negotiates contracts and monitors expenditures to ensure funds are effectively and appropriately used. Recommends actions and strategies to reduce deferred maintenance levels.
Civic Relationship Management
- Helps to build and maintain the College's relationship with local, State, and National governmental entities as well as the community.
Qualifications:
Required
- A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution or 10+ years of progressive experience working in Higher Education.
- A minimum of seven years of successful and increasingly responsible management experience in Campus Operations related activities.
- Strong knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems and/or work order/asset management software technology.
- Demonstrated commitment to building a diverse workforce and proven ability to recruit and retain highly qualified staff members.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to provide guidance and support to individuals resulting in high-performing teams.
- Demonstrated creative problem-solving and strategic-thinking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with a diverse set of college faculty, staff, administrators, and governing boards.
- Ability to effectively communicate ideas and information in a written and oral format to administrative staff, professional colleagues, governing boards, and the general public in large or small group settings.
- Ability to take initiative, work independently and collaboratively, and handle multiple priorities while remaining attentive to detail.
- Interpersonal, time management, organizational, and customer service skills.
- Experience working on a college or university campus.
- Experience with Workday or another similar ERP.
- Proficient in database and accounting computer application systems. Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook and ability to learn new software.
- An acceptable criminal offender records information (CORI) check.
- Successful completion of pre-employment physical and lift test.
