Job Overview

The Assistant Director of Night Operations serves as University facilities primary manager on campus during the night shift hours of 10:30 pm to 7:00 am, managing the 2nd and 3rd shift custodial supervisors, custodial staff, and related services, and providing oversight and authority for all maintenance work conducted on 3rd shift.

They ensure that supervisors schedule and assign staff to various buildings and/or areas for which they are responsible, and inspect work to ensure satisfactory performance, act to correct deficiencies, and take necessary steps to meet special requirements or circumstances.

The Assistant Director of Night Operations schedules Facilities Management morning meeting two times weekly with Maintenance, Grounds and Custodial Supervisors in order to update all concerning Facilities and campus activities, emergencies and goings-on from the previous night; and ensures that services provided are consistent and at a high level of quality through necessary training, supervision of production work, and emphasizing the proper use of chemicals, equipment and the importance of quality control.

They ensure that supervisors pass requests to Work Management Center requests promptly and thoroughly and demonstrates a willingness to serve. They provide the on-campus authority for Facilities during the overnight hours and makes decisions and communicates issues as they see fit.

The Assistant Director of Night Operations has a large amount of autonomy, making critical judgment calls regarding facilities emergencies, while working in conjunction with overnight leadership in GU Police Department, Residence Life/Housing, and any other department working the overnight hours - such as campus emergencies, facilities issues, weather events, and related unplanned issues.

Work Interactions

Reporting to the Director of Custodial and Grounds, the Assistant Director of Night Operations supervises four building supervisors and indirectly, 30-35 custodial staff (including custodians and floor care specialists working during the night shift hours) to ensure building readiness by 7:00 am daily. By dotted line, the 2nd and 3rd shift Maintenance Supervisor(s) also report to the Assistant Director, and are responsible for informing and for receiving instruction as needed.

Additional Information Regarding This Position

Assistant Director of Night Operations is designated as an emergency position, requiring the incumbent to report to work during inclement weather at the regularly scheduled time, regardless of whether the University is closed, opening late or closing early. As well, they carry a radio and pager during period of duty, wears a pager away from office, and respond to emergencies on a rotating on-call basis.

The standard work schedule is Sunday through Thursday, 10:30 pm to 7:00 am, but willingness and availability for working as needed is required.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5 years of custodial experience, including 3 with managerial experience - some plant operation maintenance experience preferred
  • Computer use experience
  • Ability to use a database and word processing software, along with the ability to navigate a complex Work Management system, including data management - and the ability to analyze data for decision making
  • Proficiency with reading, writing and speaking English for business administration and discussions
  • Excellent communication skills, and the ability to translate work into various forms of communication, including spreadsheet applications, memos and other written communication and verbal presentations
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, act independently and exercise mature judgement
  • Ability to analyze relevant operational issues and identify solutions
