Purpose of Position

The Building Operations Manager works under the Assistant Director of Special Facility Management and directly executes daily operations and all conversions for the Arena, Stadium, and Auditorium in which activities involve the setting up and teardown for events, graduations, NCAA Athletic sporting events. To include other special event functions, such as campus events, concerts, and small theatre productions. This position manages the full and part-time staff, as well as plans, scheduling, oversight, and manages activities of the operations staff.

The Office of Special Events is dedicated to providing quality entertainment for UTEP and the El Paso/Juarez/Las Cruces communities. We handle everything from stadium blowouts to arena shows to intimate theatre productions.

Our Venues:

The Sun Bowl is home to the UTEP Miners Football Team and the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl Football Bowl Game broadcasted on CBS each New Year's Eve. The Sun Bowl has 46,098 seats including 120 wheel chair spaces, 4 Indoor Suites, 26 Outdoor Loge Boxes, GECU Terrace - Outdoor Club, and Hunt Family Sky Lounge with 104 Indoor Club Seats

The Don Haskins Center, home of the UTEP Athletics Men's and Women's Basketball teams, and is named after the legendary UTEP basketball coach located at 151 Glory Road (like the Movie). Used as a basketball facility, shaped in a 127' x 84' octagon, it has a permanent hardwood floor that can be covered for events like Concerts, Graduations, Dinners, etc. It features 11,659 permanent seats with 40 being wheelchair spaces, and can fit 800 portable seats in the round.

Magoffin Auditorium is UTEP's prime location for smaller events such as comedy shows, ballets, graduations, dance performances, pageants, musicals/plays, and small concerts. It features one-level seating with clear sight lines consisting of 1,152 permanent theater seats and 14 wheelchair spaces.

Essential Functions

Assists the Assistant Director in placing work orders to the Facilities Services Department in all aspects of operations including: electrical, building maintenance, grounds, plumbing, hvac, elevator, safety compliance.

Liaison with the University Parking and Transportation Department to plan logistics and parking for events.

Manages the conversion & full time staff; oversight duties include hiring, scheduling, & disciplinary reporting.

Establish event needs based on client expectations. Communicate staffing and logistical needs to internal department and outside agencies and vendors

Advances local, regional and national events in the Arena, Theater, and Stadium.

Assures facility readiness and smooth operation of all events.

Review PM Schedule Reports of the HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical systems through the Facilities Services Department and create work orders as needed.

Oversees Monthly Building Checklists.

Serves as Manager on Duty as required.

Ensures that operations team receives pertinent information for most effective use of the facility and staffing.

Perform duties for set up and removal of basketball court.

Set up and remove stage, risers, seating, tables, flooring, etc. for various events.

Work extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

Other duties assigned including but not limited to assisting other departments as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Anticipate problems and appropriate solutions. Investigates, analyzes and resolves operational problems and complaints.

Provide clear, concise, and timely communication of directives to other departments.

Effectively communicate, motivate, lead, and work alongside operations team members.

Proactively use all safety mandates and teach others to do to the same to promote a safe and efficient work environment.

Emphasizes maintaining an accurate accountability of all equipment and inventory.

Embrace a culture of diversity and inclusion where guests and team members feel welcomed, valued, and heard.

Operate with an emphasis on safety for employees, teams, and guests.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's objectives, policies and applicable laws.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree

3-4 years of conversion experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Occasional travel may be required.

Must possess a valid TX driver's license.

Skills and Abilities:

Experience supervising staff to work together to accomplish projects

Ability to give clear instructions and communicate effectively with other in both oral and written form.

Certified forklift operator is preferred. Training and certification available.

Demonstrate knowledge in operational procedures, facility capabilities, industry terminology, event-related services and technical requirements for the types of events anticipated at the facility.

Knowledge of operations procedures to facilitate changeovers.

Perform strenuous physical duties at times, including lifting, carrying, moving, walking extensively throughout the building, working from various heights, and around moderate to loud noises.

Highly detail oriented, prioritizing correctly storing equipment and maintaining a clean workspace.

Must be self-motivated and work under little supervision

Ability to prioritize tasks in the most productive and/or appropriate manner

Construct and build stage based on CAD drawings and Stage Right Equipment

Experience operating equipment such as light trucks, pallet jacks, forklifts, boom lifts, or other light power-driven equipment.

Work effectively under pressure and/or stringent schedule and produce accurate results.

Maintain an effective working relationship with clients, employees, exhibitors, patrons and others encountered in the course of employment.

Remain flexible and adjust to situations as they occur
