Job Description

Position Summary

Under direct supervision, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Fire systems specialist perform skilled fire alarm and fire sprinkler work to maintain and repair fire systems and equipment.
  • Perform troubleshooting, installations, maintenance, and repairs on/of fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, alarm devices, or related equipment, following blueprints of electrical layouts, building plans, fire alarm system plans, fire sprinkler system plans.
  • Perform system testing and preventative maintenance on fire alarm/fire sprinkler systems, devices, and equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on dry chemical fire extinguishers.
  • Work on in-house projects; ensure work is in accordance with relevant codes.
  • Maintain and repair monitoring systems. Work with the University Police Department (UPD), Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), and other agencies or departments to resolve reporting problems.
  • Support services for other trades; disable and enable fire alarm systems for contractors and other trades.
  • Operate state vehicles which requires to maintain a valid Class "E" Driver's License.
  • Review inventory needs and initiate order request (as needed).
  • Clean and maintain workshop and personal equipment.
  • Enter data for work requests and time into the TMA work order system.
  • Enter data for work into Workday system.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Perform emergency work as needed.
  • Ability to be On Call is required
  • Electricians perform skilled electrical work to maintain and repair electrical systems and equipment.
  • Respond to repair orders; establish priority of repairs; diagnose problems utilizing appropriate tools and test equipment; estimate cost of jobs; acquire materials to complete jobs by contacting vendors and/or completing purchase requisitions; make repairs; document time and material costs for billing purposes.
  • Implement a preventive maintenance schedule and perform preventive maintenance such as conducting routine inspections, cleaning and servicing, and making adjustments and minor repairs to prevent malfunction and prolong the life of equipment, systems and structures.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, maintain and repair circuit breakers and transformers; emergency generators; high voltage primary power lines; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; fire alarm system; electric motors, and lighting maintenance.
  • Install or remove and reinstall wiring, computer cables, power panels, circuit breakers, lighting, switches and receptacles in accordance with code requirements; study blueprints and schematics, calculate electrical load; design new circuits based on the load; gain access to components and systems; perform installation; update blueprints; inspect electrical systems of structures for conformance with specifications and code requirements.
  • Provide training, work direction and work review to other maintenance staff such as Maintenance Repair Workers, students and others as assigned.
  • Assist contractors by providing information regarding the existing structure, equipment, systems and required modification; review bids and work completed by contractors for quality and conformance with specifications and codes as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications
  • Completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a fire systems related field.
  • Journeyman card.
  • Understanding of testing equipment and tools used in field.
  • Nevada State F Card License


Starting Salary

Grade 31, Step 1 - $43,346.88

Per Nevada Administrative Code (NAC 284.170), salaries for initial appointments for classified positions typically begin at Step 1.
