The Executive Director of Facilities and Services has direct operational and administrative responsibility for supporting the academic mission of the campus through securing and maintaining the viability and integrity of the physical campus. Reporting to the Senior Associate Chancellor for Administration and Operations, the Executive Director has overall responsibility for the unit's budget, human resource management, and all other aspects of its operation. Six reporting divisions include Capital Programs; Engineering and Construction Services; Operations, Maintenance, and Alterations; Safety and Compliance; Shared Administrative Services; and Utilities and Energy Services. Facilities and Services, including utility enterprise and conservation activities, is the largest administrative unit on campus with a budget of $169 million, and a staff of approximately 1,100. Facilities and Services supports a physical plant of more than 13 million net assignable square feet in 506 university district buildings covering 3.6 square miles.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to lead a diverse and highly professional team, including represented staff within 22 unions, and understand the unique role Facilities and Services plays in the complex and diverse university and broader community environments. The Executive Director collaborates with university leadership in developing a long-term strategic view of the physical environment of campus, including the campus master plan. Because the unit serves stakeholders across and beyond the university, it is essential that the Executive Director be a superior relationship builder who has personal resonance with the intellectual environment of a major research university, embodied in its faculty, staff, and students. First and foremost, an enthusiastic commitment to supporting the research, teaching, and service missions of the university is a requirement. The Executive Director must be a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion, demonstrated by a successful record of implementation of and support for diversity and inclusion initiatives in workforce recruitment and retention, in vendor selection, and community engagement. Likewise, the Executive Director is expected to take a leading role in the university's efforts to realize its ambitious goal to steward environmental resources in a sustainable manner. To accomplish the unit's mission, the Executive Director works closely with the Vice Provost for Budget and Resource Planning on budget-related decisions. For large capital delivery (projects with a value of $250,000 or greater), the Executive Director works with the Senior Associate Vice President for Business and Finance/Deputy Comptroller of the University System.

Founded in 1867, the university is one of the original public land-grant institutions and is a world leader in research, teaching, and public engagement, distinguished by the breadth of its programs, academic excellence, and internationally renowned faculty. Its current student enrollment, diverse in many dimensions, exceeds 51,000, with about 32,000 undergraduates and the rest being graduate and professional students. The university is a traditional residential campus with about 11,000 students living in university facilities, while others live in private housing in close proximity. The university community also includes a diverse group of about 18,000 faculty and staff. The university is located between the cities of Champaign and Urbana, in east central Illinois.

Requirements for the position include a bachelor's degree, with a master's degree strongly preferred, preferably in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, planning, or business administration. A minimum of 10 years of experience in large, diversified, and complex college, university, or comparable organizations is required, with increasing responsibilities in the management of facilities and services; substantial college or university experience is preferred. Also required: a record of excellent communication, principled leadership, and personal integrity, as well as a history of advocacy for diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

This is a full-time, twelve-month academic professional position. Salary is open and is dependent on qualifications and experience. The position is available as soon as possible after the closing date. In order to ensure full consideration, application materials (including cover letter, resume, and contact information for at least three professional references) and nominations (including the name, current position, and a brief description of qualifications and experience for the position) should be received by August 6, 2021. Interviews may take place before the closing date, but a final decision will not be made until after August 6, 2021. Candidates may create a profile through jobs.illinois.edu or may submit materials directly to:
