Job Overview

The Fire Protection Engineer is responsible for performing fire protection engineering analysis, recommendation, and subject matter expertise services on multi-discipline building projects of small to large scope, as well as single discipline fire protection engineering projects. They ensure proper management and oversight of the facilities and utilities systems and relevant partnerships for reliable & cost-effective equipment operation and code compliance; and manage operational Fire Protection and Life Safety projects and programs which have complex features, from the concept stage through the development of construction documents or program implementation.

They develop engineering solutions and implement necessary programs for corrective action and code compliance; perform special project activities requiring application of technical expertise to the development of solutions to unusually difficult problems as assigned; and perform various aspects of fire protection engineering, as directed by the Associate Director for Fire Protection Engineering, on projects and day to day operations.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Analyzes facilities operations & maintenance (O&M) data and procedures, and develops additional methodologies and processes that will measure organizational effectiveness
  • Provides recommendations to management based on O&M analyses to improve workforce effectiveness through the identification of staff training opportunities and/or targeted staffing level adjustments within the in-house trades
  • Takes data collected and constructs all manner of visual aids, charts, and graphics for management reports
  • Supports the establishment and implementation of preventive maintenance plans for all facility related equipment
  • Coordinates efforts to constructively use the preventive maintenance data collected to measure work performance, and enhance organizational metrics and measures
  • Provides internal consultant services, facility inspections, policy development, and outreach training, and other related duties as directed.


Work Interactions

Reporting to the Associate Director for Fire Protection Engineering, the Fire Protection Engineer works closely with the University Fire Marshal, and Life Safety Systems Supervisor to develop a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of fire protection engineering as it applies to Georgetown University facilities. The also liaise with GUPD, facilities management, and project management, and building occupants as necessary.

They provide technical support to a physical plant valued in excess of $1 billion and a direct impact on the facilities management annual operating budget in excess of $20 million, and capital budget for small projects in excess of $2 million annually. Additionally, they have a significant impact on the safety and comfort of the more than 20,000 GU faculty, staff, and student population.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or Master of Science degree in fire protection engineering or similar engineering discipline from an accredited program.
  • 0 to 2 years of experience in the fire protection engineering field with a desire to work in a multi-discipline consulting engineering environment
  • Excellent report writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability explain complex engineering solutions in a clear and technically sound manner
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic drawings and specifications
  • In-depth knowledge of fire protection engineering theories and practices as they apply to complex integrated fire protection systems and methodologies
  • Professional knowledge of National Fire Protection Association, International Code Council standards, other related codes and standards - and ability to effectively understand and interpret code requirements
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing on matters concerning fire protection and life safety recommendations and requirements
  • Subject matter expertise on projects and day to day operations, including various duties associated with the project management process, as well as bid review assistance, design and specification reviews, field visits, answering RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and performing acceptance testing
  • Willingness to carry a smartphone and respond to inquiries as needed - including off-hours if emergencies arise


Preferred qualification

Completion of - or in a position to complete - the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

Physical Environment

The Fire Protection Engineer performs inspections from ladders, scaffolding and platforms because parts of systems to be worked are in a hard-to-reach spaces, and all duties variously require standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.

Work is performed both inside and outside, and can be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Some inspected areas, including confined spaces, contain bad smelling fumes and/or exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, and infections, as well as hazardous materials.
