Job Description

This position will plan, organize and direct landscaping and grounds maintenance; perform related work. Key responsibilities include:
  • Supervising, scheduling, & monitoring daily operations of landscape crews to improve efficiency and enhance effectiveness
  • Planning, designing, and implementing landscape activities and programs
  • Developing and implementing a quality control program in area maintenance with strong emphasis on field inspection, feedback, and follow-up
  • Developing and maintaining a comprehensive irrigation program with strong emphasis on increasing overall system efficiency through proper scheduling, monitoring, and repair
  • Hiring, training, and evaluating performance of employees including all temporary staff for the Landscape Team
  • Troubleshooting landscape maintenance problems
  • Requisitioning, purchasing and inventorying tools, supplies, and equipment
  • Monitoring budgetary expenses
  • Encouraging safety practices among landscape team
  • Developing and maintaining a formal training program, including but not limited to, irrigation methods, new grounds maintenance techniques, methods, and equipment
  • Promoting high morale and professional pride and accomplishment within the Landscape Maintenance Team
  • Reviewing construction plans, drawings, and project information for the protection and enhancement of the campus landscape
  • Working on special projects, including but not limited to, new plantings, construction sites, turf replacements, irrigation system planning, etc., as needed, to allow for completion in a timely manner or within an established deadline
  • Working in blighted areas to enhance and restore the landscape with special emphasis on site analysis, soil improvement, and proper grade preparation
  • Research new technical landscape maintenance procedures and products to enhance the Landscape Divisions capabilities in: pruning, edging, seeding, spraying, irrigation, composting, fertilization, landscape construction, equipment maintenance, etc.
  • Restructuring and coordinating activities, participating in, and monitoring the snow removal program during the winter season
  • Working with the Director of Facilities Operations to develop and implement beneficial long term landscape objectives & initiatives to enhance campus aesthetics
  • Incorporate new training and initiatives into the routine maintenance schedule of staff members
  • Monitoring and reporting changes in plant health, aesthetics and conflicts between contractor activity and event activity
  • Working with Landscape Maintenance Team and various campus customers to resolve any conflicts as they occur
  • Performing related duties as assigned
  • Ensuring compliance with all safety procedures, and work practices established by the University
  • Avoiding any activity that creates or constitutes a serious hazard to themselves or others while working for the University
  • Immediately bringing any concern to his/her supervisor, or others designated by departmental/divisional procedures, if any employee believes that performance an assigned work task or activity may pose a serious risk to life or health
  • Ensuring that employees reporting to them are adequately trained, equipped, monitored, evaluated, and guided as appropriate to comply with established safety policies, standards, and procedures
  • Developing, approving, and/or implementing safety procedures and programs as needed, and annual performance evaluations will reflect performance in promoting safe work practices

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associates degree in horticulture, forestry, landscape maintenance, turf management, arboriculture or related field PLUS four years of experience using current commercial landscape maintenance & repair practices, operations, and techniques and safety practices related to them OR
  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, forestry, landscape maintenance, turf management, arboriculture or related field PLUS two years of experience using current commercial landscape maintenance & repair practices, operations, and techniques and safety practices related to them OR
  • Combination of education and/or experience in a related field equaling six years experience using current commercial landscape maintenance & repair practices, operations, and techniques and safety practices related to them
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory experience
  • Be able to competently and professionally: operate self propelled, hand, and power equipment associated with landscaping and grounds maintenance; perform minor repair and maintenance of grounds equipment; mix and apply landscape pesticides; install, schedule, maintain, and repair commercial grade irrigation systems; and supervise and perform routine landscape area maintenance duties
  • Good working knowledge of: plant and soil types; horticulture and professional landscaping practices; irrigation systems;
    landscape drainage, topsoil & grade work; landscape construction practices and techniques; and current standards concerning soils analysis, compaction standards, and landscape damage costs for remediation purposes
  • Some knowledge of: budget management; irrigation system layout and design; & blueprint analysis
  • Must possess: a valid motor vehicle operator's license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving University vehicles
  • Possess or obtain within a year of hire an Idaho Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License with these three categories:
    General Law & Safety; Turf Weed Control and Turf Pest Control
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, forestry, landscape maintenance, turf management, arboriculture or related field PLUS six years of experience using current commercial landscape maintenance & repair practices, operations, and techniques and safety practices related to them.
  • Specialized technical expertise in at least one branch of landscape care such as turf management; woody plant management; landscape construction; irrigation systems; etc.
  • Forklift Certification
  • Idaho Commercial Pesticide Applicators License with Additional Application Categories relating to Woody Plant Care.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry or otherwise move up to 60 pounds in a routine, repetitive manner as needed
  • Ability to bend, stoop, crawl, twist, dig, climb, and walk on a routine basis throughout the work day
  • Ability to work routinely on uneven and slick surfaces
  • Occasional confined space situations
  • Must be able to safely and competently climb ladders of various heights on a routine basis
  • Must be willing to be contacted outside of normal business hours for an event, on-call or emergency work
  • 60% Outdoor work in inclement weather conditions year round
  • 40% Shop, training, and other indoor tasks as needed
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions, such as rain, snow, dust, vapors, etc.
  • During seasonal snow removal, extended work shifts and additional night shifts are required
  • Must work safely in high traffic/congested pedestrian areas
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while operating and working around various landscape equipment and performing landscape duties
  • Must possess: a valid motor vehicle operator's license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving University vehicles
  • Be willing to work weekends and nights on an emergency basis and willing to work early morning hours as needed for pesticide applications and snow removal program
Additional Information

Salary will be between $55,000 and $65,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
