Facilities & Services (F&S) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is accepting applications for an Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Specialist. The OSH Specialist, under the administrative direction of the Associate Director, Division of Safety and Compliance, assist with the development and implementation of safety program elements.

PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY:

Under the administrative direction of the Associate Director, Safety and Compliance, assist the Occupational Safety and Health Department (OSH) with the development and implementation of safety program elements at the direction of the Associate Director of Safety and Compliance and program coordinators.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Management:

1. Inspects and evaluates facilities, work areas, equipment, materials, and processes for compliance with federal and state safety regulations and written campus programs. Examples of hazards of interest include ergonomic, machine guarding, electrical, and falls.
2. Performs testing, sampling, or surveys of equipment, materials, and environments using direct-read monitors, personal monitoring equipment, and area monitoring equipment.
3. Orders sample supplies from laboratories, prepares purchase order, completes chain of custody, and prepares samples for shipping.
4. Maintain technical equipment including field calibration, sensor changeouts, routine cleaning, troubleshooting, and preparation for factory calibration and repair.
5. Performs respirator fit testing and assists in personnel on safety regulations, policies, and procedures for the selection of appropriate personal protective equipment.
6. Assists in the development and delivery of safety and health training.
7. Assists in the development and communication of campus policies and procedures to promote compliance with federal and state safety regulations, and national consensus standards.
8. Participates on campus safety committees.

Data Management and Reporting:

9. Collects and maintains complete and accurate documentation, records of activities, and other data in various physical and electronic information management systems.
10. Develops guidance documents and provides support to campus customers in the use of OSH information management systems.
11. Compiles results, findings, and other data associated with various established departmental metrics in various physical and electronic information management systems and distributes as directed.
12. Assists in developing and evaluating data management tools, such as forms and standard reports, in various physical and electronic information management systems.
13. Assists in developing and updating content for departmental website, server and other information management systems.

Other Duties:

14. Operates a university vehicle to travel between work locations for duties such as attending meetings, performing inspections, or delivering training.
15. Assists in prompt communication of workplace incident/injury information to Illinois OSHA Reportable Injuries (fatality, amputation, in-patient hospitalization, and physical loss of eye) and investigations of such incidents, which could include investigations outside of regular business hours.
16. Pursues professional development activities to expand knowledge, maintain technical expertise and keep abreast of relevant scientific and professional developments in occupational safety and health.
17. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS-

Required:

1. Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental health, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
2. One year of professional work experience in a safety or compliance related field.

Training, Licenses or Certifications-

Required: Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license at the time of hire, which must be maintained throughout the duration of the employment period in the position.
Preferred: ASP, GSP, CHST, or OHST. OSHA 10 and/or 30 hour General and/or Construction Industry trained.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of occupational safety and health hazards and programs.
2. Basic understanding of monitoring/sampling methods for chemical, biological, and physicals hazards.
3. Basic understanding of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
4. Knowledge of workplace hazards and methods to protect against associated injuries and illnesses.
5. Ability to work and communicate with a diverse workforce.
6. Experience and flexibility with limited resources, changing priorities and compliance awareness of a diverse workforce.

Environmental Demands:

1. May work in high heat/steam, UV light or extreme weather conditions.
2. May be exposed to potential danger from moving parts and equipment.
3. May be exposed to heavy dust, loud noise, chemical fumes, welding torches, and other general conditions found within the construction trades, pollen, allergens, and animal dander.
4. May work around radiation and/or biohazardous chemicals with proper training.
5. May have to use respiratory protection, protective clothing, and other proper personal protective equipment as needed.
6. May have to climb ladders, access elevated work locations, access tunnels, work around/in confined space and hazards.

Physical Demands:

1. Strong mix of office and field work.
2. Field work includes extensive walking and climbing.
3. Position involves frequently lifting tools, toolboxes, technical equipment, equipment cases/containers, and packages for shipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
4. Must be capable of wearing all required personal protective equipment including respiratory protection, personal fall arrest systems, eye and face protection, foot protection, head protection, and body protection.

This is a full-time Civil Service Safety/Environmental Compliance Specialist position on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after March 6, 2022 . Salary is commensurate with experience.
