About the Department
The Office of Research and Economic Development provides leadership, education and oversight to support scholarly investigation and research at UC Merced.

Responsibilities:
  • Act as a catalyst for advancing the research mission of UC Merced
  • Provide service and resources that enhance research and other creative endeavors
  • Enhance partnerships and collaborations with government, industry and other research enterprises
  • Develop infrastructure and policy that promote creativity and an entrepreneurial culture

  • Communicate to the general public and to state, national and international decision-makers the value of UC Merced research in enhancing quality of life

    About the Job
    The Research Space Manager is the primary liaison between faculty, school administration, Facilities Management, Space Planning and other campus entities in the management of laboratory research space. Serves as a resource for all laboratory and research space needs for faculty including lab renovations, relocations, facilities needs, special research infrastructure needs, handling of research equipment including relocation or facilitating maintenance service calls. Uses advanced concepts to implement and coordinate building management procedures, special projects and space planning activities which require specialized consideration such as laboratories with special circumstances (e.g., special ventilation, fume hoods, gas lines, power, or use of hazardous materials) or coordination of activities with multiple building occupants and departments. Facilitates and collaborates with multiple campus departments on the design and planning for space allocation. Applies extensive knowledge of research buildings, infrastructure, policies and procedures. Determines methods and procedures on new assignments. Mentors and trains peers and supporting staff members. Supervises student assistants. Tracks and maintains inventory of all asset equipment, and is responsible for performing biennial inventory and handling or assisting with other equipment-related matters, e.g. transfers, loans, and disposal in compliance with related equipment policy.

    Key Responsibilities for assigned building/facility
  • Applies advanced concepts in serving as liaison with faculty, School administration and multiple campus entities regarding safety, access, maintenance, remodeling and construction activities of faculty and research buildings with complex needs including scientific research laboratories. Coordinates and communicates research laboratory needs with central campus departments including Facilities Management, EH&S, Fire Marshal, Construction Services, Real Estate Services, Campus & Public Safety, Equipment Management.
  • Directly collaborates with faculty and lab occupants to identify and address space needs that accommodate research, specialized equipment, and proper handling of hazardous materials. Participates in laboratory walk-throughs with potential faculty candidates to identify needed space infrastructure and features. Provide advice, guidance and assistance with laboratory design and election of appropriate laboratory furniture according to campus standards and protocols.
  • Coordinates with multiple units throughout the organization to provide a safe and secure facilities environment. Interfaces with Campus Fire Marshal, Environmental Health & Saftey and Facilities
  • Management on the correction of cited laboratory deficiencies. Coordinates with Shipping and Receiving any large lab equipment delivery and troubleshoots challenges. Adheres to building management procedures and recommends changes; ensures currency, relevance and adherence to internal and external regulatory requirements.
  • Contributes to development of budgets for new faculty lab renovations and moves with significant building infrastructure upgrades. Develops and maintains lab renovation checklist and budget spreadsheet for laboratory research space renovations/requests by incoming faculty.
  • Communicates and coordinates with faculty on any campus wide projects that may impact labs and research. Coordinates emergency repairs during and after work hours. Collaborate on special School and building projects that benefit faculty, students and staff.
  • Schedules and tracks maintenance of lab equipment including renewal of annual service contracts.
  • Troubleshoot with vendors and contractors as needed.
  • Collaborates with School and department leadership on coordination of lab space planning; evaluates and advises on the design and allocation in close collaboration with campus Space Planning Office. Tracks and updates laboratory research space layouts, including square footage, and share information with faculty and School leadership and campus Space Planning staff. Provides updated information to Space Planning and Analysis and compare to campus space records as reflected in FacilitiesLink/MetaBIM.
  • Provides planning and coordination for construction and alteration of projects on a continuing basis.
  • Coordinate with Facilities on laboratory research space renovations and/or instrumentation installation.
  • Coordinate lab vacancy activities including ensuring that lab equipment is accounted for, removed or relocated and that lab space is properly cleared out and/or decontaminated.
  • Equipment management and inventory. Tracks, monitors, and controls all asset equipment. Develop and implement inventory control procedures and best practices. Track physical assets using a FileMaker database. Coordinate with Business Financial Services to locate and tag asset equipment and to transfer or properly remove surplus lab equipment. Handle equipment surplus requests from faculty and coordinate with campus equipment manager. Develop strategies for shared use of unassigned equipment for use by faculty.

    Qualifications
    Bachelor's degree in related field and five (5) years of experience or nine (9) years of related experience/training is required.

    Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training is preferred.
