Job Description
This Construction Estimator reports to the Supervisory Project Manager with daily guidance and product quality control provided by the Lead Estimator. Under indirect supervision, this position facilitates and coordinates the development of accurate, timely and detailed material take-offs and cost estimates in the execution of construction projects at all University property and leased sites. This position assesses cost effectiveness of products, projects, and/or services and coordinates and/or participates in the coordination of project implementation as a member of various construction project teams. This position is expected to estimate between 150 and 250 projects valued at $8M to 12M per year for both in-house labor and contracted entities with $5M or more executed.


Responsibilities
  • Responsible for determining the cost of unique and complex construction projects such as repair and maintenance and/or renovation of existing buildings.
  • Develop rough order of magnitude (ROM) to detailed and comprehensive construction cost estimates needed to determine the level of funding required for construction projects
  • Supporting a project team, provides cost estimates at the various design phases (where applicable)
  • Calculates/estimates construction costs using RS Means, historical data and other estimation software.
  • Works closely with Project Managers to ensure the customer's requirements are understood and captured in the project scope.
  • Consults with clients, vendors, or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues, including revising estimates to meet customer's budgetary constraints
  • Develops initial costs estimates given feasibility studies generated by the Planning and Design Group, developed by Campus Consultants
  • Surveying/reviewing requested project location.
  • Works closely with customers to assess their needs. Solicits and reviews estimates and pricing from vendors to verify.
  • Analyzes design, plans, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials and labor estimates.
  • Reviews data to determine material and labor requirements and prepares itemized lists
  • Computes cost factors and prepares estimates used for management purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work; selecting vendors or subcontractors; and determining cost effectiveness.
  • Maintains all records of estimations done. Contributes to team effort by sharing knowledge of past estimates.
  • Consults with clients, vendors, or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues
  • Analyzes completed projects to compare estimated costs to actual costs and determine the reason for any discrepancies
  • Maintains currency of knowledge regarding relevant state-of-the art technology, equipment and or systems

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or GED
  • Experience: 5-7 years of construction estimation experience
  • Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Regularly reads and interprets plans and specifications.
    • Must have the ability to multi-task and handle many projects simultaneously.
    • Strong working knowledge of all construction crafts including electrical, plumbing and carpentry work.
    • Create and maintain relationships with the campus community, vendors, contractors and co-workers.
    • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
    • Ability to work as part of a team or work individually.
  • Other Requirements: Valid Driver's license
