GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

The person in this position will have considerable experience in the development and implementation of landscape plans. Ground maintenance workers will have experience in the upkeep, care, and maintenance of grounds on campus property by performing assigned groundskeeping duties.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Cuts grass using power mowers and hand tools.

Trims and edges around walks, flowerbeds, and buildings using clippers, weed cutters, and edging tools.

Trims and shapes trees and shrubs to improve growth or to remove damaged leaves or branches using pruning tools.

Daily monitoring of campus areas for litter, trash, and debris removal.

Snow and ice removal from walks and driveways using hand tools, power equipment, sand, or chemicals. This may require overtime, nights, and/or weekends.

Plant grass, flowers, trees and shrubs.

Spray lawns, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides using hand or automatic sprayers.

Operates all power equipment and hand tools in a safe, cautious manner. Wears protective safety glasses, shoes, respirators, and clothing as required.

Assists in setting up facilities for special events and activities.

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Able to communicate with staff, students, and visitors through oral, written, or diagram form.

While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to handle, finger, or feel objects, tools, and controls. Occasionally, the employee must kneel or crouch.

The employee must be able to lift up to 50 pounds or more on some occasions.

Must be self-motivated, aware of surroundings, and detail-oriented.

Must be capable of working in an environment in which demands and priorities change rapidly.

Duties at Paradiso Athletic Complex

Mowing of all fields and surrounding areas at the Paradiso Athletic Complex.

Take care of all equipment and servicing.

Groom turf field and paint as needed.

Striping of all fields and areas, i.e., Football and Lacrosse practice fields, Heminger Baseball fields, Soccer fields, Softball fields, and Track and Field practice areas.

Take care of irrigation.

Help fertilize 3x a year.

Occasional landscaping and spraying of weeds.

Help with snow in Winter uptown.

Repair work when needed.

Order supplies.

Work with coaches and field scheduling/maintenance.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/ABILITIES FOR THE JOB

Knowledge of groundskeeping and horticultural principles and practices;

Knowledge of ornamental shrubs, plants, and flowers, as well as their uses in landscaping grounds;

Knowledge of planting, cultivating, pruning, spraying, and trimming requirements of flowers, shrubs, trees and grass;

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form;

Must be self-motivated, aware of surroundings, and detail-oriented;

Able to take direction and work independently with minimal supervision;

Ability to do extensive walking, standing, squatting, and bending;

Ability to withstand exposure to vibrations and noise from machinery and to use appropriate safety equipment to minimize exposure;

Ability to be trained in the proper handling and use of hazardous chemicals and pesticides;

Ability to work in a pleasant and positive manner.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
