This position is a part of the Building Operations team located at 3175 Bowers Ave., Santa Clara, CA. The Building Operations Team supports the Silicon Valley Campus which houses UCSC Extension, UCSC Baskin Engineering School, UC Scout, and Smarter Balanced. Under the supervision of the Building Operations Manager, the incumbent provides building maintenance to staff, faculty, students, and guests of the UCSC Silicon Valley Campus.

Functions include, but are not limited to: Projects such as refinishing floors, vinyl, tile, linoleum, concrete, wood, etc., shampooing carpet and upholstered furniture and detailed cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, waxing, dusting, polishing; Responding to campus-wide custodial emergencies such as spills, broken glass, vomit, blood, emergency restroom cleaning; Ordering, tracking, restocking, maintaining logs and distributing custodial supplies; Unlocking Campus; Coordinating the work of Custodians and orienting and training when necessary; Ensuring proper methods, materials and equipment maintenance provide for a safe working environment; Maintaining a record of work completed and labor hours; Inspecting for the quality and quantity of work produced and completed by the crew in all areas such as restrooms, stairs inside and outside, entrances, stairwell corridors, offices, cubicles, break rooms, meeting rooms and all public areas. Ensuring custodial COVID-19 guidelines are being properly followed; Responsible for the master keys assigned to the crew and the security of the buildings and areas in which they work; Scheduling work assignments and informing the supervisor of conditions and progress of projects.

JOB SUMMARY

The Lead Cleaning Associate coordinates and trains a team responsible for maintaining a clean working and learning environment at the UC Extension Silicon Valley Campus, ensuring proper methods, materials and equipment maintenance provide for a safe working environment. Areas of responsibility beyond regular cleaning responsibilities include oversight of custodial supplies, care of building floors, quality control of team's work including adherence to COVID-19 guidelines, work assignment scheduling, status updates for the supervisor, and responsibility for the master keys assigned to the crew and the security of the buildings and areas in which they work.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $22.92 - $24.79 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. The salary shown above is the budgeted range the University reasonably expects to pay.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Project work and Work Orders
  • Perform project work such as refinishing floors, vinyl tile, linoleum, concrete, wood, etc., carpet and upholstered furniture shampooing, building detail cleaning projects such as sweeping, mopping, waxing, dusting, polishing, etc. and also ensuring proper use of cleaning chemicals. Collect recycle from inside buildings and discard at a designated location. High dust inside buildings and immediate outside of building entrances. Initiate and complete purchase orders for custodial supplies, through CruzBuy access.

30% - General duties
  • Respond to campus wide custodial emergencies and Work Orders such as spills, broken glass, vomit, blood, emergency restroom cleaning and restocking etc. Distribute custodial supplies. Campus unlocking. Clean assigned areas.

10% - Absentee Coverage
  • Act as a substitute for the Custodians by performing all the duties of their positions.

10% - Assigning work and training
  • Responsible for coordinating the work of Custodians assigned to his/her crew; orient, and train when necessary; advise in the methods, materials, and equipment to be used and ensure the proper use, care and safe working conditions of equipment; order and keep track of custodial materials and equipment by taking inventory of supplies, maintaining logs and preparing order forms to replenish supplies as needed; keep record of work completed and labor hours by maintaining logs of work accomplished; inspect for the quality and quantity of work produced and completed by this crew, including documentation of processes and tasks.

5% - Weekend shift
  • If assigned weekend shift, may work alone or lead other custodians. Perform campus unlocking, clean assigned areas, event coverage and project work.

5% - Team Leader
  • Under general supervision, responsible for acting as a group leader for a crew of between 1 to 2 Custodians and/ or Senior Custodians on the day or evening shift.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of custodial equipment and tools such as vacuum cleaners, powered floor polishers, industrial carpet cleaners, mops, carts, buckets, personal protective equipment, etc.
  • Ability to direct activities, coordinate, lead, train, schedule work assignments, provide constructive feedback and advise custodians of work safety requirements and maintain appropriate documentation of processes, all in a timely manner.
  • Ability to order supplies, inspect completed work, ensure assigned key distribution and security of buildings are maintained, and inform supervisor of conditions and progress and documentation of work projects.
  • Effective English communication skills and interpersonal skills sufficient to interact and work effectively with staff, faculty, students and to work well in a team situation.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to implement a customer service approach, with a commitment to high ethical standards.
  • Ability to take initiative, organize, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those within UNEX and other individuals within the University as necessary to successfully conduct assigned tasks and work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals at all levels of the organization directly or indirectly involved with task and work assignments.
  • Ability to accommodate changing priorities and complete tasks despite intermittent interruptions.
  • Ability to be part of a team and foster teamwork by maintaining a cooperative atmosphere and effective working relationships with a diverse population from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to operationalize and incorporate the concepts of sustainability into daily work efforts.
  • Ability to carry and operate technology, including cell phones and tablets and use programs and applications.
  • Ability to understand and speak Spanish.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in carpet and upholstery shampooing, refinishing tiled, linoleum, wood and concrete floors, use of chemical compounds according to directions on labels.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
  • Must have the ability to: operate a vacuum, floor scrubber, and polisher; use cleaning chemical compounds; perform essential custodial duties including dumping bags into dumpster or moving equipment and materials with or without accommodations.
  • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
  • The ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to conduct outdoor site visits, including use of required personal protective equipment, as required to conduct investigations, inspections, or view work in place.
  • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials.
  • Ability to bend, stoop and/or kneel, move or lift up to 40 lbs. of materials or equipment, using good judgement to ensure movement is done safely with assistance or accommodation when required.
  • Will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Ability to occasionally work overtime with little or no advance notice.
  • Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
  • Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
  • Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
