Position Summary

The Senior Director of Project Management and Construction supports Stony Brook Medicine's strategic mission by overseeing all capital facilities projects, both renovation and expansion of Stony Brook Medicine. The buildings encompass approximately 2.5M square feet of floor space and consist of Stony Brook University Hospital, New Bed Tower, Mart, Ambulatory Surgery Center, Ambulatory Care Building, and Eastern Long Island Hospital covering approximately 103 acres including parking structures and various parking lots throughout Stony Brook Medicine.

The Senior Director of Project Management and Construction reports directly to the Associate Director of Facilities and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the project management office, code compliance office, and construction trade and labor professionals. This includes managing and coordinating the activities of construction projects, developing project budgets and ensuring that goals and objectives of each project are accomplished while meeting specified timeframes and funding parameters.

Duties of the Senior Director of Project Management and Construction s may include the following but are not limited to:
  • Provides oversight and supervision of Stony Brook Medicine's Facilities Department in the daily operations of major capital construction projects and renovation projects. This includes the project management office, code compliance office, business office and hospital construction department.
  • Collaborates with hospital's senior leadership, State University Construction Fund, Hospital Administrators, Hospital Architectural Services, Hospital Facilities Planning, Hospital Strategic Planning and various department heads within Stony Brook Medicine's community to ensure objectives are being met, while ensuring appropriate and timely funding of approved projects. Participates in the development of the annual and five year capital plan.
  • Reviews project goals, quality of work, project schedules and associated project costs to achieve completion of the project within established schedule and budget allocations. Oversees all phases of construction activities including but not limited to; the division's workforce, materials and equipment purchases. Ensures that construction specifications are being followed as per the project scope i.e. building requirements of The Joint Commission (TJC), NYS Department of Health, state and local regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborates with hospital's senior leadership, State University Construction Fund, Hospital Administrators, Hospital Architectural Services, Hospital Facilities Planning, Hospital Planning and various department heads within Stony Brook Medicine to develop the annual and five year capital plan.
  • Oversees HR functions for state employees including recruitments, participating in search committees, developing appointments, preparing employee evaluations and performance programs within the guidelines of union and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the management of in-house construction staff as well as SFE labor personnel.
  • Monitors adherence to hospital standards, policies and quality management. This includes ensuring proper documentation, justifications and approvals are processed in accordance with the department's policies and procedures.
  • Manages and oversees the Certificate of Need process which includes ensuring CON assessments are completed on time for new project requests, developing construction timelines for start and end of construction. Works with Hospital Architectural Services to ensure paperwork is completed and submitted for CON projects. Oversees the coordination of CON site visits. This role may be responsible to participate in CON site visits and develop corrective action plans for any plans of corrections issues identified at the site visit. Collaborates with code compliance and project management to ensure that all plan of corrections issues have been addressed and implemented in a timely manner.
  • Reviews and approves all departmental spending which includes oversight of procurement paperwork, project funding requests, change orders, requests for proposals, and requests for qualifications, as required.
  • Ensures that all Life Safety inspections are completed and compliant as per regulatory standards.
  • Monitors and ensures appropriate documentation is maintained in Projectmates. This may include but not limited to: construction drawings, project schedule, procurement paperwork, requests for proposals, vendor payments, requests for information, submittals, change in scope forms, funding requests, etc.
  • Provides a monthly activity reports of projects to the Associate Director.
  • Schedules and conducts various department meetings, such as weekly construction meetings, ICRA meetings, and department head meetings. Schedules project and finance meetings as needed.
  • May be called upon for other duties, as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Evidence of academic success with a Bachelor's Degree in engineering or construction management, or equivalent with at least 10 years' supervisory experience of a team or division responsible for new construction, renovations, and alterations in a healthcare environment. In lieu of a Bachelor's Degree, a minimum of 15 years direct experience in leading a team or division responsible for supervising new construction, renovations, alterations, in a large healthcare facility setting.
  • Must be well versed in new construction, renovations and alterations.
  • Must have the ability to manage and track all TJC, CMS, OMH, inspections and to ensure follow up on regulatory compliance, maintenance requests, new construction and renovation projects requests.
  • The right candidate must possess practical hands on experience in the fields of Infection Control, Fire Safety, NFPA, TJC, OSHA and NYS DOH regulations, as well as codes and regulations governing health care facilities.
  • Knowledge of building codes and standards of practice.
  • Knowledge of facilities planning and construction management processes and procedures including construction materials and latest methods for new construction, as well as renovations and alterations to meet best practices and ensure quality assurance.
  • Knowledge of estimating, budgeting, and scheduling practices, including escalation factors and market trends.
  • Skills in reading and interpreting plans and specifications and to compare them with construction progress.
  • Experience in planning, coordinating, administering, and exercising strategic and overall operational controls.
  • Must possess excellent and effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to communicate with different audiences, including high level leadership, design firms, construction vendors and cross level stakeholders.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be a dedicated, reliable and flexible to work evening and weekends.
  • Computer literate and experience with spreadsheet and project management programs are essential.

Special Notes: This position will remain posted until filled or for 90 days max.
