OVERVIEW:
The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District (Shasta College) sits at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west. The main campus is located in the city of Redding, population 90,000. DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Maintenance Electrician performs maintenance, repair, alternation, and installation of electrical equipment in District buildings and facilities. Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employees in this classification may oversee the work outcomes of others to accomplish projects. This job class requires technical knowledge and skill in the methods, procedures, materials, and equipment used in skilled electrician work, as well as the ability to perform semi-skilled electrical maintenance operations. This job class functions at a journey level of classification.


CLASSIFICATION: Range 40 on the current Classified Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Work assignment hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability


Examples of typical duties are descriptive and not restrictive in nature.
Essential Functions:
  • Perform journey level technical work including proper installation, operation, service, repair, adjustment, testing, and maintenance of the District's electrical systems.
  • Maintain, test, inspect, repair, or recommend alterations for electrical systems and equipment, including high and low voltage light and power systems; clocks, fire alarms, analog communications systems, and electrically-operated, motor-driven equipment, machinery, and other tools.
  • Perform tasks to install, operate, provide proper connections for, and electrically maintain all alternative energy devices and equipment such as generators, photovoltaic systems, and any future alternative energy systems.
  • Install and maintain generators for power outages and events including monitoring of load, shedding load as necessary, and regular refueling.
  • Assist coordination with contractors, engineers, and architects, including investigating areas of work to be performed; locating and marking all underground electrical, alarm, and communication wires in areas to be excavated; opening gates; buildings, rooms, and panels for inspection; inspecting buildings and underground vaults for pathways to be utilized; and performing related functions in these areas.
  • Complete tasks for use of facilities requests, including set up and breakdown of electrical components (cords, power strips, lighting, etc.) for events.
  • Provide input on design and engineer specifications and procedures for contractors and engineers, including product specs, District standards and procedures, cost estimations, plan checking, project follow up and inspection, and developing scopes of work.
  • Install and monitor temporary metering equipment to determine where electrical system upgrades are necessary for building remodels and additions.
  • Install new electrical systems, wiring, and grounding systems.
  • Maintain, test, and adjust all 12 kV substations and related switches.
  • Install all types of power writing in coordination with IT department.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.
  • Order tools, materials, and equipment as assigned.
  • Maintain records and logs related to electrical systems, equipment maintenance, and operations.
  • Install, maintains, and repairs electronic control equipment.
  • Oversee and direct the work of others in a lead capacity as assigned.
  • Perform a variety of general semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and special project work as assigned.
  • Perform all electrical work in conformance with building and safety codes.
  • Perform other related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
Knowledge of:
  • The methods, procedures, equipment, and tools related to electrical installation, operation, maintenance, adjustment, services, repair, and testing.
  • Safety rules, policies, codes, and regulations related to electrical equipment installation, operation, maintenance, service, testing, adjustment, and repair.
  • Effective customer service methods and techniques.
  • Effective listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Basic mathematical operations necessary for inventory control, ordering, receiving, installing, operating, maintaining, servicing, testing, adjusting, and repairing electrical and related equipment.
  • Safe use, maintenance, and storage of tools and equipment.
  • Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff and students.
Ability to:
  • Perform skilled electrical maintenance, installation, conduit bending, and repair work.
  • Organize, prioritize, and accomplish assigned work within established time frames.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.
  • Prepare accurate time and material estimates.
  • Establish and maintain accurate work logs and records.
  • Understand and carry out complex instructions with appropriate levels of supervision and oversight.
  • Safely use and operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment used for building electrical maintenance.
  • Quickly and effectively diagnose electrical maintenance, service, and repair issues and take appropriate action.
  • Learn from errors, determine appropriate corrective action, and prevent repeated occurrences.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations accurately.
  • Safely and effectively work on ladders, scaffolding, rigging, scissor lifts, bucket trucks, booms, and roofs of varying heights.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the required duties.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and ability backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as staff members and students with physical and/or learning disabilities.


Experience/Education


Must have a valid California driver's license or obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Education Required:
  • High school graduate or equivalent
Education Preferred:
  • Associate's degree in a related technical discipline
Experience Required:
  • Three years of journey level electrical work
