  • Position Summary:
    UAS has one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation with grounds and landscaping that enhances our educational buildings, housing, pathways, and this wonderful setting in southeast Alaska. UAS dedicates planning, education and whole lot of hard work to keep our grounds and landscaping looking good. We are looking for a dedicated individual to join our Facilities Services team as a full time Grounds/Landscaping Maintenance Service Worker 3.

    Duties:
    Provide for campus beautification and safety by; planting and caring for ornamental trees, shrubs, annual and perennial flowers, Lawn and hardscape maintenance, snow removal and sanding, and a full range of other landscaping maintenance tasks. Co-operates with and takes direction from Grounds Lead Person and Landscape Superintendent. Assist in the training of temporary workers. Performs general labor and other semi-skilled duties when assisting tradesmen as directed. Performing all duties as assigned to maintain campus security and function. Representative duties include mowing, edging, watering, mulching, fertilization, irrigation, weed control, brush clearing, floral production-planning and growing, planting, landscape bed cultivation and cleanup, trash removal and other services common to the industry. Hardscape and signage maintenance: basic parking lot and roadway maintenance to include pothole repair, street sweeping, power washing, trash removal, and signage installation. Snow removal/ice control: performed by snow removal and ice control techniques including, but not limited to, operation of heavy and medium duty equipment such as loaders, Bobcats, and sanders; operation of light duty equipment such as plow trucks, Toolcat sanders, and tractors; manual labor including shoveling, sweeping, ice chipping and application of ice-melting compounds. Frequent irregular hours are required for snow removal and ice control. Miscellaneous: performance of housekeeping work including, but not limited to, emptying trash cans; moving furniture; setting flags; set-up and take-down for events; maintaining small equipment, cleaning equipment and shop areas; monitoring inventory and placing orders for parts and supplies; and making purchases in accordance with established practices.

    This position performs a wide range of duties including; planting and caring for ornamental trees, shrubs, annual and perennial flowers, lawn and hardscape maintenance, snow removal and sand/salt distribution in the winter. This position also will provide general labor for our trade's crew labor on a periodic basis.

    This position requires a current Alaska driver's license and the operation of all types of grounds power tools and medium duty equipment such as loaders, Bobcats, Tool Cats, loader, and pickup with a snowplow.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
    • Respectful, positive, and effectively work with a diverse team, the University community and the public is required.
    • Ability to lead and provide clear instruction to seasonal laborers, students and volunteers in the performance of basic landscape maintenance is required.
    • Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and
    • maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in all types of landscape maintenance including but not limited to; ornamental tree and shrub care, production and care of annual and perennial flowers, basic horticultural principles and snow removal is required.
    • Experience in equipment usage should include; Skid Steer tractors, trucks, loaders and tools common to the trade. Knowledge of small equipment including; mowers, blowers, pressure washers, Weed Eaters, and snow blowers, as well as the ability to recognize and report malfunctions of this equipment
    • Ability and willingness to work outside in bad snow, wind and rain is required.
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Ability to follow directions, be cooperative and respectful.
    • Ability to self-motivate and take the initiative to complete tasks.
    • Excellent time management skills; reporting to work promptly.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
    • Basic computer knowledge and skills is required.
    • Must be dependable, cooperative and able to work independently as well as interact positively with a diverse crew and campus community, providing assistance even when under pressure.


    Preferred Experience & Education:
    Previous experience within the grounds maintenance or construction trades is preferred.

    Required Experience & Education:
    Current, valid Driver License and driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving criteria. Three (3) years related experience and/or training;or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Salary Information:

    This is a full-time, 12-month, non-exempt, union represented staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. Salary Information: MSW-3 /Step 1 $19.23/hr. (See Article 9.2 in the L6070 Collective Bargaining Agreement, Wage Grade Schedule - http://www.alaska.edu/labor/local-6070/ ).
