Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Chief Operating Engineer, provide a comfortable safe operating environment for students and staff as economically as possible through management of the day-to-day operations of the Plant Engineering and Maintenance Department.

  • Directs day-to-day operations, maintenance and repair of all physical plant equipment such as high and low pressure boilers, centrifugal and reciprocating chillers, pumps, steam and chilled water distribution systems, building ventilation, electrical generation, refrigeration, building automation, life safety, and related equipment.
  • Direct, coordinate, and manage the day-to-day duties of the engineering/maintenance personnel.
  • Ensure effective operations by determining work priorities, scheduling and assigning staff, following up on work results.
  • Alone or in conjunction with the Chief Operating Engineer, develop operating procedures for plant operations by reviewing production, repairs, preventative maintenance, quality control, daily operations, maintenance reports and statistics, emergency situations and operational standards.
  • Supervise and manage Operating Engineers and Maintenance Mechanics.
  • Provide training, direction, feedback, and evaluation.
  • Build positive employee attitudes and foster team work.
  • Oversee compliance with all safety procedures.
  • Provide technical support for the department on many and varied types of complex systems.
  • Perform some of the most complex procedures.
  • Supervise and use diagnostic instruments and tools to analyze problems with equipment.
  • Purchase supplies, and repair parts.
  • Locate and consult with suppliers.
  • Advise, and approve purchases by department personnel.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and oversee work with outside contractors.
  • Maintain shift schedules for department.
  • Approve vacation, shift changes, and overtime.
  • Confirm and submit employee payroll/time cards, resolving discrepancies with Payroll Department.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Operating Engineer and/or Project Managers, consult with engineers and architects in the development, installation and startup of new equipment and systems for new and existing buildings.
  • Provide essential technical information regarding the college physical plant and equipment.
  • Assure the college is receiving the specified equipment, installed correctly, and operating as designed
  • Work closely with the Risk Manager and Hazardous Materials Coordinator to help resolve safety environmental complaints and issues.
  • Contribute to the Facilities team effort by accomplishing interdepartmental results as needed.
  • Acts for the Chief Operating Engineer in their absence.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications:

    • Education
      • Associate Degree in Engineering in the MEP related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience required.
      • City of Chicago Stationary Engineers License required.
      • EPA Universal Refrigerant Technician certification required.
      • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering in the MEP related discipline preferred.
    • Experience
      • 3 to 5 years' experience in operating and maintaining all types of power plant and building mechanical equipment required.
      • Same as above with some level of foreman/supervisory capacity preferred.
    • COD Training
      • Bloodborne Pathogens
      • Hazardous Communications
      • Forklift/Scissor/Aerial Lift
      • Arc Flash


    Working Conditions:

  • Power plant, HVAC, automation, and life safety equipment.
  • Electrical meters, temperature, humidity, flow, and pressure instruments, hand, and power tools, man lifts, and computers.
  • Generally good, but can be exposed to fire, steam leaks, gas leaks, electrical hazard, harsh weather, and long hours in emergency situations.
  • Extensive walking, climbing in and on large equipment, ladders, and roof tops.
  • Lifting up to 50lbs. and moving heavy tools and equipment.
  • Must pass physical exam at College expense.
  • This position requires a background check, physical and drug screen.


  • Hiring Range:
    Managerial 5 Salary/Based on minimum qualifications; 77,000.00 - 88,000.00
